Hüttenfinder, back to the map

Privacy Policy

Hüttenfinder is built to collect as little data as possible. There are no user accounts, no cookies, no analytics and no advertising trackers, and the dates and filters you choose are applied in your browser without being sent anywhere. Below you can read what data is still processed when you visit this site, and why, in line with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Austrian Data Protection Act (DSG).

Hosting

This website is hosted on GitHub Pages, a service of GitHub, Inc., 88 Colin P. Kelly Jr. Street, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA. When you visit, GitHub automatically processes technical data such as your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time of access in server logs, and stores IP addresses for security purposes. This is necessary to deliver the website and keep it secure (legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, legitimate interest). We have no access to these logs; GitHub decides how long they are kept. The hut list and availability data are loaded from the same server. See GitHub’s privacy statement.

Maps

The map is built from image tiles that your browser loads directly from two providers:

  • basemap.at, the official administrative map of Austria, published by the Austrian federal states and their partners. The tiles are served from servers of the City of Vienna (Stadt Wien).
  • OpenStreetMap, run by the OpenStreetMap Foundation, St John’s Innovation Centre, Cowley Road, Cambridge, CB4 0WS, United Kingdom, for the background map and areas outside Austria.

To deliver the tiles, these providers receive your IP address, browser information, the address of this website and which part of the map you are viewing. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in showing the huts on a map (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). The OpenStreetMap Foundation serves tiles through the Fastly content delivery network, so requests may also be processed outside the UK. See the OpenStreetMap Foundation’s privacy policy.

Hut photos

Hut photos come from Wikimedia Commons and are stored on this website’s own server. No connection to Wikimedia is made when you view them.

Fonts

The fonts are hosted on this website’s own server. No connection is made to Google or any other font provider.

Cookies & analytics

This website does not set cookies, and it does not use analytics, advertising or social media trackers.

The one thing kept on your device is the language you pick from the language menu. Your browser stores it under the name “hf-lang” so the site opens in that language next time. It is only stored if you choose a language yourself, it stays in your browser, and it never reaches us or anyone else. Because it does nothing but what you asked for, it needs no consent, which is why there is no cookie banner. Clearing your browser data removes it.

Booking and links to other sites

When you click “Book online” or open a hut’s website, you leave Hüttenfinder. We don’t pass on any information about you, and we don’t learn whether or what you book. From that point, the other site’s privacy policy applies, for example hut-reservation.org’s. Phone numbers open your phone’s dialler; calls don’t go through Hüttenfinder.

Information about huts

For each hut, Hüttenfinder shows details such as its location, facilities, phone number, email address and website. This information comes from public sources: OpenStreetMap, Wikidata, Wikipedia, the Österreichischer Alpenverein and hut-reservation.org. Where a phone number or email address belongs to a person, for example a hut warden, it is personal data. We publish it so hikers can reach and book the hut, which is in the interest of both hikers and huts (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). If you run a hut and want your details corrected or removed, or you object to their publication (Art. 21 GDPR), email hutfinder.at@gmail.com and we will act promptly.

Contacting us

If you email us, we process your email address and the contents of your message only to handle and reply to your enquiry (legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) or (f) GDPR). Our email is hosted by Gmail, a service of Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland, so your message is stored on Google’s servers. We don’t share it with anyone else, and we delete it once the matter is resolved unless we have to keep it for legal reasons.

Data transfers outside the EU

GitHub, Inc. and Google LLC, which may process Gmail data in the USA, are certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, which the European Commission recognises as providing an adequate level of protection (Art. 45 GDPR). The United Kingdom is covered by an EU adequacy decision.

Automated decisions

We don’t use automated decision-making or profiling.

Your rights

You have the right to access, correct or delete your personal data, to restrict its processing, to data portability and to object to processing (Art. 15–21 GDPR). To use them, email hutfinder.at@gmail.com. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. In Austria, this is the Datenschutzbehörde, Barichgasse 40–42, 1030 Vienna, dsb.gv.at.

Security

This site is only served over encrypted HTTPS connections. If a data breach occurs, we will notify the Datenschutzbehörde and, where required, the people affected (Art. 33 and 34 GDPR).

Changes to this policy

We update this policy when the site changes, for example when a new service is added. The version on this page is always the current one.
